Position Paper Tips

Hey everyone! Just wanted to offer some additional guidance on your position papers.

As a reminder, CSC will be using standard Position Paper format. Besides the general format, we wanted to offer some tips on the research process and the formation of your paper. 


Research


The biggest favor you can do for yourself in the writing process is to really apply time and effort into understanding the topics beforehand. Luckily, your generous dais has written to key to beginning this process: your synopsis! Not only do we recommend reading this synopsis, but we hope that you will interact with it. Ask questions, make connections, reflect on what you learned. Familiarizing yourself with the synopsis is the key to a smooth research experience. 


After reading the synopsis, don’t stop there! This piece is just a stepping stone for the research we hope you will complete. Maybe read some additional case studies, look at some current events relating to your topic… ultimately, the sign of a well-researched paper is taking the information within the synopsis a step further.

Writing


After researching, you should have a good sense of what you want to include in your paper. We suggest making an outline of this important information first, then adding commentary on why these points are important. A sign of a great position paper is one that not only contains important information, but elaborates on it and provides clear and effective commentary. 


Be sure to leave yourself enough time to write and revise (don’t hesitate to ask for help or an extension if needed)... and please make sure to properly cite your sources.

Just a reminder that CSC will use the standard, default position paper format. Position papers are due on February 18th to be considered for the Research Award, and February 25th to be considered for any committee award. Please reach out to us if you need more time, and we would be happy to grant an extension.

Committee Flow + Procedure Guide

Hi Delegates! I wanted to check in with you to provide some more insight to how our committee is going to work at BMUN LXXII. CSC will be using Standard BMUN Procedure .  Our committee will begin by opening a running Speaker’s List (standard speaking time is 1 minute, 30 seconds) and those speeches will be followed by 2 30-second comments by other delegates. This is the default timing for the Speaker’s List and can be amended if agreed upon by the committee. The Speaker’s List can also be interrupted by Moderated Caucuses and Informal Caucuses that give delegates the opportunity to exchange opinions on policy, solutions, and more specific aspects of the topics at hand. In our committee, our dais plans on leaving the flow of committee up to you delegates, so we suggest you come prepared with specific subtopics and policies you hope to discuss! During Informal Caucus time, delegates are expected to draft and write Resolutions which will then be presented to the committee during a Formal

 Hi everyone!  My name is Amy Zhang and I'm so excited to meet you all at BMUN 72. I will be your CSC vice chair, and I can't wait to see amazing debates and dialogue on this year's topics.  A little bit about me: I am a third-year at UC Berkeley studying Public Health and Data Science. This is my third year in BMUN as well. Outside BMUN, I also work on data analysis and visualization for non-profits. Before moving here, I lived in Dalian, China for around 10 years.
